Stylistically, it wasn’t THAT far removed from another album released that year, Uncle Tupelo‘s celebrated swan song, Anodyne. Maria blends Memphis soul with enough legit twang that it should rightfully be considered a milestone of alt.country. That the album is overlooked is bewildering.
